As the Centre announced on Tuesday that citizens above the age of 45 will be allowed to get vaccinated against the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) from April 1, the Union health ministry said on Wednesday that this decision was taken as 88 per cent of the total fatalities in the country due to the disease were taking place in the age group of above 45 years.

Addressing a press briefing, Union heath secretary Rajesh Bhushan elaborated on this point by saying, “The case fatality rate for the age group of 45 and above is 2.85 per cent across India. Therefore, this group is the most vulnerable population group and needs to be protected first.”
